Purpose of the Position:

The College of Business is seeking a dynamic and innovative Senior Instructional Designer to consult on an hourly on-call basis to develop engaging and effective learning experiences. This position works closely with faculty members to design, develop, and enhance online courses that are engaging, effective, and meet high-quality standards. This position will ensure that our online offerings are aligned with the college’s academic goals, and provide a transformative learning experience for students. The incumbent will sSupport faculty in designing and developing instructional materials and course modules for online delivery and advise faculty and staff on the latest educational technologies to create engaging and interactive online learning environments. A high priority for this role is adapting our courses and pedagogy to leverage new and rapidly changing technologies, such as generative AI.

  • Technology Enthusiast and Consultant: Serve as a consultant for online technologies, developing cutting-edge pedagogical strategies, and providing enthusiastic support and instructional design services to faculty and staff in the development, support, implementation, and evaluation of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses, with a focus on enhancing student learning and effective pedagogy.

  • Lead and Innovate: Collaborate with key stakeholders across the organization to lead and track the completion of a variety of innovative learning and development projects that prioritize effective teaching methods and student engagement.

  • Instructional Material Development: Assist with the design and development of instructional materials and course modules for online delivery, incorporating the latest technological trends and evidence-based teaching practices.

  • Curriculum Conversion: Act as a subject matter expert in converting existing classroom-based curriculum to eLearning and other modalities, ensuring that the transition enhances pedagogical effectiveness and student learning.

  • Technology Advocacy: Advise faculty and staff on the latest educational technologies, including generative AI, to create engaging and interactive online learning environments. Inspire and support faculty to adopt and integrate these technologies to improve teaching effectiveness and student outcomes, including career readiness.

  • Faculty Support and Training: Provide enthusiastic support and training to faculty on the effective use of learning management systems (LMS) and other educational technologies, encouraging a culture of technological adoption and pedagogical excellence.
  • Needs Assessments and Improvements: Conduct needs assessments, design and develop content to evaluate the effectiveness of training, and provide forward-thinking recommendations for instructional technology and course design improvements, with a focus on student learning.

  • Quality Review and Enhancement: Review online courses according to quality standards as determined by UAH's Enhanced Teaching and Learning (ETL) Office, and best practices in online education. Assist faculty in designing courses that meet these standards, ensuring they are modern, pedagogically sound, and effective for student learning.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Plan and lead meetings, discussions, and outreach to stakeholders and subject matter experts to move training initiatives to completion, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching and learning.
  • Course Feedback and Adaptation: Monitor course feedback and enthusiastically make necessary adjustments to course design and content to stay current with technological advancements and pedagogical best practices.

  • Multimedia Integration: Manage the integration of multimedia and interactive elements into online courses, such as videos, quizzes, and simulations, to enhance the learning experience and improve student engagement.

  • Create Engaging Content: Develop highly interactive, engaging, and effective new training content using modern learning technologies (i.e., eLearning, distance learning, and video), with a special focus on leveraging generative AI to enhance pedagogy and student learning.

  • Program Impact Reporting: Monitor, collect, compile, and report on the implementation and impact of training programs, highlighting successes and areas for technological and pedagogical enhancement.
  • Communication: Create and distribute Learning and Development Communications regarding new/updated programs and important changes to systems impacting the workforce, promoting a culture of continuous learning and teaching improvement.

  • Stay Current and Lead: Stay updated with the latest advancements in instructional design, online education, and effective pedagogy, particularly in the area of generative AI and other emerging technologies. Share this knowledge enthusiastically with faculty and staff to help them stay current and improve student learning outcomes. 

  • Assist with special projects as assigned

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field.
• 6-8 years of full-time work experience
• Proven experience in instructional design, particularly in a higher education setting.
• Strong proficiency with learning management systems and digital learning tools.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty and other stakeholders.
• Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Knowledge of best practices in online education and the ability to apply these practices to course development.
• Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing needs and technologies.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master's degree is preferred.
• Experience working in a University setting is desired
• Instructional consultant experience is strongly preferred

Published Salary (if available):

$83,200/2=$40.00 per hour
