Purpose of the Position:

The Financial Aid Counselor assists in ensuring that all aspects of the university's Financial Aid office are followed including all federal and state rules. The Counselor is responsible for ensuring that all students of the university are treated fairly and have access to all federal, state, and university aid programs and ensures that all issues are dealt with in a timely manner. The Counselor's responsibility includes ensuring that the financial aid office adheres to all federal, state, and university policies, assisting the Financial Aid Manager daily, and covering the office in the Manager's absence.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Evaluate data elements from supporting documents to ensure accuracy of Title IV financial aid applications daily per Department of Education (ED) regulatory guidelines
• Verify Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application per documents submitted by students
• Submit and process corrections necessary to ensure Title IV eligibility is accurate. Ensure documentation meets not only Title IV regulations but also IRS tax law and individual state court definitions and decisions
• Execute corrections to FAFSA data via software Ellucian – Student Forms, Banner, TDClient, FileZilla, and Automic on a daily basis for up to two academic years at a time
• Monitor and review COD for correction files returned from ED to UAH. Assure files move and load into appropriate software and information is accurate
• Works with the Financial Aid Manager on the scholarship process
• Prepare candidate lists for scholarship recipient selection committees
Schedule and coordinate communication and meetings with scholarship • recipient selection committees
• Post competitive scholarships into Banner
• Assist management of the outside scholarship process including receiving outside scholarship checks and/or EFTs, post the related awards into Banner, and handle the return of outside scholarship funds when necessary
• Maintain the “Outside Scholarship” UAH web page and review requests for scholarship postings
• Post athletic scholarships into Banner and reconcile Banner to NCAA database
• Manage Dual-Enrollment scholarships
• Manage Co-op financial aid process
• Manage the Study Abroad process
• Assist with the scholarship renewal process
• Use discretion and independent judgment to advise and counsel students, parents, and/or prospective students in solving their educational financial problems through scholarships, loans, grants, employment and financial counseling.
• Serve as an Advisor for in-person and/or phone appointments.
• Respond to the questions and counseling needs of currently enrolled students, prospective students, and parents in person or through effective written, phone, and email communication.
• Assist with reviews for professional judgment of student files and making adjustments as needed.
• Provide student loan and indebtedness counseling on an individual and group basis.
• Award, revise and/or approve the awarding of financial aid through the specific controls of program policy and guidelines.
• Assist students with specialized needs such as: Study Abroad, Vocational Rehabilitation, Graduate, and International Student issues.
• Member of the Financial Aid SAP Committee
• Member of the Financial Aid Scholarship Appeals Committee
• Member of the Financial Aid Professional Judgement Committee
• Maintains the UAH Financial Aid web page including You Can Book Me
• Back-up for front desk, phone, and office email account

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience
• 3-5 years of full-time verifiable administrative work experience (to include higher education financial aid experience)
• Knowledge of Title IV programs and regulations
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must have attention to detail with the ability to manage deadlines

Desired Qualifications:

• Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution is preferred
• 4 years of higher education financial aid experience is desired
• Banner Financial Aid experience is preferred
• Title IV verification regulations and Federal Tax Code experience

Published Salary (if available):

$36,000 - $40,880
