Purpose of the Position:

The Academic Advisor II is a full-functioning academic advising professional who serves as a resource for College of Science students, faculty, staff and community.

Duties/Responsibilities

For current UAH students, the Academic Advisor II:
● Is available to meet with students in person or virtually, 6 or more meetings per day.
● Is available for “Walk-in” advising appointments.
● Actively listens and provides individual service and assistance during advising appointments.
● Is fluent in accessing and using UAH student centered software including my.uah.edu, UAH Course catalog, Degree Works, Banner, and Google Suite.
● Is knowledgeable about majors and minors in the College of Science, and guides students in accordance with their interests using UAH student centered software.
● Is conversant with UAH courses, including Charger Foundations, and applies transfer credits, AP/IB credits, and placement exams to a student’s advantage.
● Assists students with course registration using Schedule Planner software and other relevant registration methods.
● Monitors student progress through creating, maintaining, and updating a personalized long-range plan for each student.
● Analyzes each student’s long-range plan: Includes reviewing each student’s transcript, Degree Works profile, and tracking their overall degree progress. This analysis also considers each student’s academic and socio-economic circumstances.
● Updates student information using Native Banner software
to reflect accurate degree information. This may include adding/removing degree attribute codes such as Pre-Health, or Double major as needed.
● Displays sensitivity in addressing the unique and sometimes complex learning and socioeconomic needs of students.
● Communicates regularly with Department chairs and faculty across UAH to assist students in getting their questions answered.
● Is familiar with and directs students to UAH resources such as Career Services, Student Health Center, and the Student Success Center.

For prospective UAH Students an Academic Advisor II:
● Is available to meet with prospective students in person or virtually, and is available to for “Walk-in” advising appointments.
● Presents College of Science degree information and answers questions during weekly prospective student visits scheduled through the UAH Office of Admissions.
● Advises students during COS orientation sessions.
● Helps prepare prospective student materials including reviewing and updating presentations, and creating informational folders provided to each prospective student.
● Conversant with UAH courses, including Charger Foundations, and applies transfer credits, AP/IB credits, and placement exams to the student’s advantage.

For Reporting an Academic Advisor II:
● Reviews reports including Failed pre-requisites, Course Program of Study (CPOS), and non-registered students at least three times a year.
● Reviews the override request form and enters overrides as needed.
● Communicates with students who appear on reports and assists them so they can be successful and continue to pursue their degrees.
● Adjusts a student’s Degree Works profile as needed to assist students with their Financial Aid concerns.
● Identifies students who may benefit from academic assistance to reach good standing (i.e., a 6th course repeat, a late withdrawal, etc.).

For Outreach and Events an Academic Advisor II:
● Participates in outside activities including Discovery Days, Charger Preview events, and Week of Welcome as requested.
● Assists in First year experience (FYE)/Charger Success presentations related to Degree Works and GPA.

For Professional Development an Academic Advisor II:
• Is an active member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
• Attends 1 NACADA conferences a year.
• Serves as a resource and support to other academic advisors within same or other UAH colleges.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree.
• Minimum of 2 years of full-time verifiable Academic Advising work experience.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and Google Suite.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks.
• Must be able to work flexible hours.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master's degree is preferred
• Experience in higher education academic environment.
• Experience working in a University setting.

Published Salary (if available):

$42,000-$45,000
