Purpose of the Position:

The Chemical Engineering Department and the Civil Engineering Department is looking for a Laboratory (Lab) Technician to provide students with a safe and clean learning experience in each lab. The Laboratory (Lab) Technician will maintain lab safety and audits checks, assist in the undergraduate teaching labs each semester, maintain lab experiments, document experiments, track materials, supplies, equipment, and chemical expenditures, assist with lab clean outs, state audits and asset management, serve as a liaison between the departments, the OEHS, and the College of Engineering Safety Committee.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Safety & Audit (Chemical & Civil Engineering)

• Check fire extinguisher, safety showers, eye wash stations and all other safety equipment for all labs as required by OHSE.
• Hold safety meetings for all GTAs/GRAs, Research staff/students, and for each department student organization at the beginning of the semester.
• Conduct a periodic safety audits of labs – at least once per quarter.
• Maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization in all labs at all times.
• Fix any audit issues within a timely manner allotted by OEHS.
• Maintain a safe inventory of all supplies, materials, and chemicals and remove all expired chemicals in a timely and appropriate manner, and maintain logs and reports.

Assisting in Undergraduate Lab Classes (Chemical)

• Provide assistance to students when working all labs where student can come to no harm.
• Assist in setting-up and clean-up before and after class experiments.

Experiment/Material/Laboratory Maintenance (Chemical & Civil Engineering)
• Keep an inventory all chemicals in all labs.
• Review equipment periodically to ensure all items are functioning safely and properly.

Accounting (Chemical & Civil Engineering)

• Identify when chemicals and lab supplies are in short supply and notify appropriate faculty/department chairs.
• Assist in finding quotes and completing required paperwork for replacement equipment and/or chemicals, and lab supplies.
• Assist the Department Chair with the expenditures on the equipment account.

Lab Cleanouts (Chemical & Civil Engineering)

• Surplus items that are no longer used in the labs and maintain a log of surplus equipment to compare with the asset management yearly audit.
• Work faculty and students to constantly clean all labs.
• Work with OEHS to properly dispose of chemicals.
• Determine the content and remove any unlabeled chemicals from all labs.
• Throw out all unneeded trash and equipment from all labs.

State Audit/Asset Management (Chemical & Civil Engineering)
• Assist with state auditors in finding items assigned to the departments.
• Assist state management with internal audits to ensure all tagged items are correctly placed.
• Correct any audit issues within a timely manner allotted to OEHS.

Department/College Committees (Chemical & Civil Engineering)

• Serve as a committee member to the College of Engineering Safety Committee.
• Assist in all safety related aspects of ABET Review and Accreditation.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience.
• 1 – 3 years of full-time verifiable work experience preferably in an Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Chemistry lab.
• Must be able to work with little to no supervision.
• Lab equipment maintenance experience is required.
• Must have strong attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
• Must have accounting or finance related knowledge and skills.
• Knowledge of environmental health and safety guidelines, rules and regulations is required.
• Must be a team player and possess good verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is preferred.
• 3 or more years of experience in engineering, industrial hygiene, or chemistry labs is desired.
• AED/CPR/First Aid Certified is preferred.
• HAZWOPER certification is desired.
• University or higher education experience is preferred.

Published Salary (if available):

$44,000 - $46,000
