Purpose of the Position:

The Academic Advisor II (Academic Success Advocate) works as part of a central, University-wide group that is responsible for the delivery of a year-round strategy of proactive outreach to students that promotes and advances efforts at improving academic success, academic progress rate, and timely degree completion of undergraduate students. Advocates collaborate with leadership across the campus to identify and address educational and personal barriers that can impact student academic success.

Following a cohort concept, each advisor is responsible for managing the progression of a specific group of assigned students all the way through graduation. The position will focus on those students identified as having persistence challenges, such as students on Academic Probation (or the brink of it), major selection/changes (especially across colleges), first-generation, financially challenged students, and others who are "at-risk" for persistence or graduation. Particular attention will be given to areas where UAH has historically lost a disproportionate number of students, such as first-semester transfer students, juniors, and seniors.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Provides academic advising services to undergraduate students by conducting individual and group counseling/advising sessions.
• Advocates and working with academic advisors and the colleges.
• Spearhead the University effort to improve undergraduate student persistence/retention, progression, and completion in support of key strategic university goals and measures, including enhancements to the IPEDS first-year retention rate and the 4-year and 6-year graduation rates by being a front-line resource for students.
• Engage in an analytical, data-driven approach to problem solving and decision-making.
• Create and manage a plan for intrusive, developmentally appropriate student-level intervention for each cohort student
• Conduct outreach to identified students and takes necessary steps to address their concerns: identify core issues, triage concerns when appropriate, connect students to appropriate departments and resources when necessary
• Collaborate in the development and delivery of a comprehensive early alert system focused on identifying and reaching at-risk students by engaging appropriate professionals to support students’ abilities to persist in their programs
• Identify trends and factors tied to degree progression and degree completion that can be used to develop strategies to enhance student retention and timely graduation
• Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, college advisors, and Charger 360 reports to identify students in need of intervention at all points in the student experience

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or an academic field, or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience
• Minimum of 2 -5 years of experience in academic advising.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or an academic field preferred
• 3-5 years of Academic Advising, or Career Development, or Coaching experience in a higher education setting desired
• Additional doctoral-level coursework and certifications in Academic Advising, Coaching, or Career Counseling preferred
• Demonstrated experience or knowledge in the field of the first-year retention or in student completion/graduation efforts desired
• Participation with a regional or national recognized professional organization such as NACADA desired.
• Research and/or publication knowledge focused on first-year retention, student success, or related areas preferred

Published Salary (if available):

$43,000 - $49,157
