Purpose of the Position:

 

The Academic Advisor II/III will serve as a resource for College of Science students, faculty, staff and community. This position will also assist the Pre-Health Professions Advising Office as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities

● Meet with students in person or virtually, 8 or more meetings per day and be available for “Walk-in” advising appointments.
● Actively listen and provide individual service and assistance during advising appointments and through email exchanges.
● Display fluency in accessing and using UAH student centered software including my.uah.edu, UAH Course catalog, Degree Works, Banner, and Google Suite.
● Be knowledgeable about majors and minors in the College of Science, and guide students in accordance with their interests using UAH student centered software.
● Ability to be conversant with UAH courses, including Charger Foundations, and apply transfer credits, AP/IB credits, and placement exams to a student’s advantage.
● Assist students with course registration using Schedule Planner software and other relevant registration methods.
● Monitor student progress by creating, maintaining, and updating a personalized long-range plan for each student.
● Analyze each student’s long-range plan at least three times a year (January/May/September). Includes reviewing each student’s transcript, Degree Works profile, and tracking their overall degree progress. This analysis also considers each student’s academic and socio-economic circumstances.
● Update student information using Native Banner software to reflect accurate degree information. This may include adding/removing degree attribute codes such as Pre-Health, or Double major as needed.
● Display sensitivity in addressing the unique and sometimes complex learning and socioeconomic needs of students.
● Communicate regularly with Department chairs and faculty across UAH to assist students in getting their questions answered.
● Be familiar with and direct students to UAH resources such as Career Services, Student Health Center, and the Student Success Center.
● Review reports including failed pre-requisites, Course Program of Study (CPOS), and non-registered students at least three times a year.
● Review the override request form and enter overrides as needed.
● Communicate with students who appear on reports and assist them so they can be successful and continue to pursue their degrees.
● Adjust students' Degree Works profiles as needed to assist with their Financial Aid concerns.
● Identify patterns and/or degree roadblocks in reports, i.e., multiple students missed a “spring only” course, multiple students earned a C or lower in a core course, etc.
● Identify students who may benefit from academic assistance to reach good standing (i.e., a 6th course repeat, a late withdrawal, etc.).
● Meet with prospective students in person or virtually, and be available for “Walk-in” advising appointments.
● Present the College of Science degree information and answer questions during weekly prospective student visits scheduled through the UAH Office of Admissions.
● Advise students during COS orientation sessions.
For this COS Advisor position, the advisor must have general working knowledge of careers and requirements for students entering Health care professions after graduation from UAH. The Advisor II or III will spend 10% of their time assisting the Pre-Health Professions Program Manager with duties as assigned, related to advising and outreach with the Pre-Health Professions office.
● Participate in outreach activities including Discovery Days, Charger Preview events, and Week of Welcome.
● Assist in First year experience (FYE)/Charger Success presentations related to Degree Works and GPA.
● Become an active member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and attend 1-2 conferences a year as possible for professional development.



 

Minimum Requirements:

 

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education & years of experience
• 2 years or more of full-time verifiable Academic Advising work experience or experience working in a University setting
• Proficiency with MS Office tools and Google Suite
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
• Ability to work flexible hours

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

• Master's degree is preferred
• Experience in higher education academic environment.

 

Published Salary (if available):

$45,000-$50,000
