Purpose of the Position:

SERVIR is a joint development initiative of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and works in partnership with leading regional organizations worldwide to help developing countries use the information provided by Earth-observing satellites and geospatial technologies for managing climate risks and land use. SERVIR’s goal is to empower decision-makers with tools, products, and services to act locally on climate-sensitive issues such as disasters, agriculture, water, ecosystems, air quality, and health.

The SERVIR Science Coordination Office (SCO) is seeking a Research Scientist in Health to serve a key role within the Air Quality and Health Service Area. The portfolio of Air Quality and Health is rapidly growing with increasing numbers of science applications being developed, and trainings conducted, to meet the needs of SERVIR regions. The role of the Research Scientist will be to co-develop Earth-observations driven services, provide training, and expand the applied research portfolio of SERVIR’s Air Quality and Health projects. A successful candidate will have fundamental expertise in the fields of satellite remote sensing and modeling applications in health, excel in communicating the science in both academic and non-academic settings, and demonstrate experience in collaborative leadership. Domestic and international travel may be required for this position.

The SERVIR SCO in Huntsville offers a flexible and dynamic work environment, with an in-house team of over 30 science professionals and numerous opportunities for growth and professional development.

Minimum Requirements:

● Master’s degree (preferably in Public Health, Earth or Atmospheric Science, Geosciences, Environmental science, Engineering, or a similar field) or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience
● Minimum 12-15 months of full-time verifiable work experience
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills
● Leadership experience and self-initiative
● Experience contributing to and/or leading complex projects with multiple institutions
● Advanced experience in Earth Observations-driven methods and models
● Experience with running, calibrating, and applying satellite-based models related to human health, climate, and environment
● Earth science geospatial data analysis experience
● Math, statistical & scientific data processing automation (using libraries, packages or tools such as SciPy, NumPy, ArcPy, R, Math.NET, MatLab, etc.)
● Raster data including processing of temporal datasets
● Publication record
● Willingness to work closely with others in diverse team environments
● Ability to manage science products and applications in international settings, and to travel to international locations for trainings and collaborative meetings.
● Cultural awareness and sensitivity pertinent to diverse SERVIR regions and supporting locally-led development

Desired Qualifications:

● PhD in Public Health, Earth or Atmospheric Science, Geosciences, Environmental science, Engineering or similar field.
● Experience working with NASA and/ or other Federal agencies
● Publications in the field of Health are a plus.

Published Salary (if available):

$70,000-$85,000
