Purpose of the Position:

The Police Sergeant/Instructor is the highest level in the Police Series and is a first-line supervisory classification, requiring comprehensive knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures. Supervises enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and regulations to provide for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, and property within the areas under the control and authorized jurisdiction of the agency. Plans, directs, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities. Oversees and participates in all work activities; assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Duties / Responsibilities:
• Supervises, directs, and evaluates Police officer Recruits and other non-sworn support staff; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control.
• Ensures the enforcement of all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations (both traffic and criminal) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
• Supervises the detection and deterrence of criminal activity, response to calls relayed by dispatchers, and supervises patrolling of designated areas.
• Responds, supervises, and manages personnel and resources during any critical type incidents until the incident is completed or until relieved by the appropriate incident commander.
• Prepares review and corrects criminal incident reports and logs on the assigned shift.
• Supervises the issuing of citations, apprehension, arrest, and processing of criminals, fugitives, and offenders as appropriate.
• Perform the duties of a Police Officer.
• Supervises events and other situations that occur on the assigned shift. This may include such tasks as crowd control, fire safety, and ensuring proper security staffing.
• Responsible for ensuring that arrests and protective custodies are handled properly under the applicable laws; that prisoners are read their rights afforded under State and Federal laws, that all Department and court paperwork is completed in a timely manner; that prisoner injuries
are documented in writing and first aid is rendered; that the prisoner is transported to the lockup, hospital, or court as needed in a safe manner; that booking is completed, including an assessment of suicide risk, and that a suicide monitor is in place while the person is under the Department’s
control; that a constant suicide monitor is conducted of prisoners; that meals are provided at regular intervals, and that bail is offered according to accepted court practice.
• Testifies at court or other hearings on behalf of the Department. Coordinates with the Administrative Captain/Lieutenant on court appearances for officers.
• Develop goals for the unit, review reports, and evaluate staff performance.
• Trains staff in operations, maintains an extensive knowledge, enforces policies and procedures, monitors the status of work in progress, and inspects completed work, consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.
• Develop and maintain rapport with University officials, ensuring appropriate communication with all members of the University community.
• Serve as a liaison to other University departments and outside law enforcement agencies during the execution of tasks.
• Maintain a trustful and cooperative relationship with members of the division and the University community to ensure work is completed efficiently and with a spirit of cooperation. Maintain a high level of morale on their assigned shift and within the division.
• Serve as a certified Field Training Officer only in emergency situations. Provide training to officers and oversee training conducted by others. This includes general oversight of Field Trainees on an assigned shift and coordination with Field Training Officers involved.
• Serve as Certified Firearms Instructor, Certified Range OIC, Certified Law Enforcement Instructor, Certified Radar Instructor, and/or Certified Non-Lethal Weapons Instructor.
• Conduct roll-call training at the beginning of each shift. Is cognizant of and demonstrates appropriate safety guidelines and conducts safety training.
• Plans and conducts civilian training regarding various safety and law enforcement topics.
• Attends and participates in supervisor and command staff meetings.
• Show positive leadership by encouraging others to learn and develop, giving clear and direct guidance and feedback on their performance. Encourage and support staff, making sure they are motivated to achieve results.
• Prepares lesson plans, obtaining training aids, critiques instruction, and instruction materials.
• Perform as scene commander during significant emergencies, directing the activities of other law enforcement personnel and agencies, fire personnel, emergency medical personnel, or other governmental services at the scene of an emergency.
• Attend in-service and specialized training to meet state requirements and enhance services.
• Works closely with the Administrative Captain/Lieutenant to ensure all staff maintain required certifications (e.g., criminal justice cert, CPR, etc.) and attend mandatory training as needed by Attorney General Guidelines and Department policy.
• Monitor workplace conditions for safety hazards.
• Supervises events and other situations that occur on the assigned shift. This may include such tasks as crowd control, fire safety, and ensuring proper security staffing.
• Monitors compliance with Department policies and procedures for incident and alarm response as well as calls for service.
• Assist with special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities as needed.
• Perform any other task necessary for the University to accomplish its mission.

Minimum Requirements:

• High school education or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience.
• 4 years or more experience as a sworn law enforcement personnel.
• Must be APOSTC certified within six months of hire.
• Must have a valid driver's license. If the license is from another state, one must obtain
a valid Alabama driver's ID upon assuming the duties of this position.
• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• If prior military service, must have an honorable discharge.
• This employee will be a regular driver.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree is preferred.
• Current APOSTC certification is desired.
• Additional years of police experience can be substituted for a degree.

Published Salary (if available):

$70,000 - $75,000
