Purpose of the Position:

The Systems Engineer III is a senior member of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) responsible for the planning, implementation, and ongoing administration of the university’s server, storage, deployment, and virtualization infrastructure. This position requires a deep understanding of IT systems administration concepts and technologies, applied within the framework of university policies and industry best practices. The ideal candidate will be able to analyze complex problems, communicate solutions effectively, and work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities Include:
• Apply a high level professional technical knowledge and experience to situations of widely varying complexity in efforts to collaboratively research and plan new strategies for systems operation that support requirements for optimal performance, security, innovation, and cost efficiencies.
• Perform industry-standard system administration and management tasks in accordance with established change management procedures.
• Improve and maintain documentation in accordance with established OIT standards and practices.
• Document configurations, procedures, problems, and resolutions for future reference.
• Expand role-specific and general IT professional knowledge base in self and others.
• Participate in knowledge-transfer assignments, mentoring activities, work-shadowing assignments, etc.
• Work with the Systems team to design and implement IT solutions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and connectivity problems, including user access and component configuration.
• Install, configure, update, and maintain operating system and application software in accordance with industry-standard best practices and established configuration standards.
• Ensure continuous systems operation by responding to issues, problems, incidents, alerts and other notifications effectively and in a timely manner.
• Provide systems support including account management, security hardening and monitoring, backups, installation of applications, and troubleshooting including troubleshooting of applications issues from the operating system level.
• Coordinate group efforts on IT projects.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related work experience.
• Significant full-time verifiable work experience in an information technology role involving in-depth hardware and software troubleshooting.
• Proficiency with Python, Bash, Perl, and/or PowerShell.
• Proficiency with Ethernet and IPv4 networking fundamentals, including basic troubleshooting.
• Working familiarity with Microsoft Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM), Active Directory, and Entra (formerly Azure Active Directory).
• Working familiarity with cybersecurity concepts and practical experience securing IT systems.
• Verifiable full-time work experience implementing, managing, and troubleshooting server virtualization infrastructure.
• Verifiable full-time work experience managing and troubleshooting on-premises enterprise block storage (e.g., SAN).
• US citizenship is required

Desired Qualifications:

• Extensive or advanced experience administering Microsoft Configuration Manager, Active Directory, and/or Entra is strongly preferred.
• Any of the following certifications, or a more advanced certification in the same subject area, is preferred: MS-102, RHCSA, LPIC, CCNA, Network+, or Security+.
• Working familiarity with monitoring utilities such as Nagios and/or Icinga is desired.
• Working familiarity with information aggregation and indexing utilities such as Logstash, Graylog, or Elasticsearch is preferred.
• Working familiarity with other configuration/automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef is desired.
• Working familiarity with vCenter Operations Manager (vCOPS) or vRealize Operations Manager (vROPS) is preferred.
• Familiarity with NIST 800-171, NIST 800-53, or the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is desired.

$74,000 - $94,000
