This employee is a key member of the UAH Facilities & Operations department, which is responsible for the planning, design, construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair for the University. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Grounds & Landscape Management, the Landscaper III (Landscape Specialist) will provide high-level proficiency and skills regarding a wide array of technical landscape functions to ensure proper installation and maintenance of UAH grounds and landscape.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Participate in the installation, care, and maintenance of campus landscaping, both individually as well in a crew setting.
• Perform a variety of advanced landscape-related duties on campus landscaping, including but not limited to proper plant placement and installation, sod installation, skilled pruning of trees, plants, and shrubs, mechanical weed management, landscape bed edging, and mulching.
• Maintain campus turfgrass areas by mowing, trimming, edging, and blowing.
• Safely operate heavy equipment including tractors, backhoes, sweepers, and forklifts. Safely operate task utility vehicles, dump trucks, and other landscaping equipment.
• Remove trash and other debris, including leaves, from assigned zones with motorized and hand equipment.
• Assist in planting bed planning, plant and annual color selection, and design recommendation, and assist in the procurement process.
• Use horticultural expertise to routinely inspect landscape plants, trees, and shrubs and identify disease and insect issues and make recommendations to rectify issues.
• Work individually and in a group to perform landscape renovations and installations.
• Apply fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and soil amendments with backpack sprayers, push spreaders, and other necessary equipment based on labels and state requirements.
• Provide leadership during special projects.
• Assist with the development of Landscaper employees.
• Mentor and assist in the training of Landscaper I & II employees.
• Assist with the development of Landscaper employees.
• Mentor and assist in the training of Landscaper I & II employees.
• Assist with campus moves, setups, and special events.

• High school education or equivalent.
• 3-5 years of full-time verifiable grounds or Landscaping installation, and maintenance work experience.
• Ability to work alone or with minimal supervision.
• Must possess a working knowledge of landscaping and maintenance techniques and equipment including chemical weed, insect, and disease control knowledge; plant identification; and care experience.
• Must consistently project a professional demeanor, and a positive attitude, and professionally communicate with and answer inquiries from visitors and the University community.
• It is essential that the employee be physically able and capable of operating all equipment. This employee will be a regular driver as defined in the UAH Vehicle Safety Management Program, which includes but is not limited to, possessing a valid driver’s license and maintaining an acceptable MVR in the judgment of the University’s insurance company.

• Supervisory experience is desired.
• Ornamental & Turf Pest Control-Supervisor (OTPS) certification or obtain within one year of appointment is preferred.
• Must have Landscape Plant (SLP) certification or obtain within one year of appointment is desired.
• Certified Arborist experience is preferred.
