Purpose of the Position:

The Academic Advisor in Honors College will advise Honors Students and manage Honors enrollment.

The Academic Advisor is the officer most specifically charged with monitoring student retention and success. Academic Advisors must ensure that all students have every opportunity to move effectively and efficiently through their programs. Working with the latest software tools (e.g. Degree Works and Banner data), Academic Advisors alert struggling students about programs that may be more appropriate to their skills and preferences

Duties/Responsibilities
General Advising:
• Provide a full range of recruitment and academic advising services to all Honors College students about content and structure of postsecondary programs including graduation and/or transfer requirements for a particular program of study. Correspond in-person, telephone, email, and-or by virtual appointment with prospective students and parents for review of the academic record
• Interpret University policies, procedures, and curriculum to faculty, staff, and students.
• Audit, monitor, and evaluate individual student academic progress.
• Comply with FERPA and UAH regulations regarding the privacy of student information.
• Create a development plan and educate students including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals and ensuring students make progress toward Honors diploma or certificate through meetings and developing plans of study.
• Supervise 3-4 Peer Advisors and participate in hiring, and training those employees who provide 150 hours of advising per semester.
• Answer inquiries and provide information to prospective students, students, and parents.
• Fully knowledgeable and maintain expertise on major degree plans and programs, academic policies and procedures in accordance to assigned area.
• Develop advising materials and guides (digital and print), holds group advising sessions at freshmen orientations, Honors Intro to Research
courses, and in conjunction with the engineering mentoring courses.
• Coordinate advising programs such as peer advising, career placement, internships, or other college programs.
• Assist with recruitment and outreach efforts, and speak with prospective students.
• Maintain centralized student record database and record-keeping for reporting/assessment, maintain up-to-date knowledge about the College’s programs and requirements tracking progress toward Honors diploma.
• Report and communicates regularly with the Dean via email, phone, etc. on
issues such as at-risk students. Provide feedback and information to faculty and students on the program and curricular conflicts student experience.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree
• 2 years of full-time verifiable academic advising work experience
• Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
• The ability to navigate a diverse environment is required
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Academic Advising experience is preferred
• Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques
• Experience in a University setting
• Knowledge and experience with admissions and recruitment cycles and processes
• Knowledge of UAH policies and processes
• Knowledge of UAH degree programs
• Masters degree preferred
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge using or interpreting Banner systems, degree audits, and student success management platforms is preferred

Published Salary (if available):

$41,500 - $47,750
