Purpose of the Position:

The Cave Bio Lab at The University of Alabama in Huntsville seeks a Research Associate II for an NSF-funded project on the development, integration, and application of environmental genetics and genomics for studying biodiversity in groundwater ecosystems. This project will integrate traditional and environmental DNA sampling with genomic approaches (UCEs and RADseq) to identify patterns and drivers of groundwater biodiversity, ascertain the impacts of anthropogenic threats, develop best practices of the application of eDNA in groundwater ecosystems, and explore the intersection of eDNA and genomics for ecological and evolutionary inference. The candidate for this two-year position will play a central role in 1) specimen collection, identification, and curation; 2) environmental DNA sampling; 3) ii) genetic/genomic and eDNA metabarcoding data generation and analyses, 4) undergraduate student mentoring; 5) education and outreach activities; and 6) preparing presentations, reports, publications, and other materials. The candidate for this position should have some hands-on experience through education or past work in the generation and analysis of population genetic and genomic datasets and familiarity with the application of environmental DNA for biodiversity monitoring. The candidate will be expected to support the analysis of various data sets supporting broader research and application objectives, and to contribute to educational and outreach activities as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Genetics or a related field
- 12-15 months of full-time verifiable field and lab work experience
- Demonstrated experience with genomic/genetic data generation
- Demonstrated experience with genomic/genetic data and statistical analysis
- Ability to communicate effectively in speaking and in writing

Desired Qualifications:

- Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, or a related field is preferred
- 1 year of hands-on experience with genomic data analysis is desired
- 1 year of hands-on experience working in caves or remote locations is preferred
- Experience with environmental DNA including metabarcoding is desired
- Experience in specimen identification and curation is preferred
- Experience in technical writing for papers and proposals is desired
- Experience in large data processing of genomic data is preferred
- Experience in technical/scientific presentations is desired

Published Salary (if available):

$45,000 - $48,749
