Purpose of the Position:

The Electrician I is a key member of the UAH Facilities & Operations department, which is responsible for the planning, design, construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair of the University. This employee will perform skilled work in installing, repairing, and maintaining all electrical equipment, appliances, and circuitry. The employee sets his/her shift hours within a second shift timeframe (Monday - Friday, 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM). Once the employee sets their shift hours, the schedule is considered final and cannot be altered without prior approval. The second shift is considered a shift differential pay category, if the employee returns to the first shift at any time, the shift differential will be removed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare and install conduits and wires.
• Locate and repair sources of power distribution failures and short circuits and make connections.
• Install and repair the following: clocks, indoor and outdoor lighting, ballasts, bulbs, panels, electrical circuits, outlets, switches, and a wide variety of electrical equipment and circuitry.
• Repair electric motors, motor starters, and contactors
• Rewire old circuits.
• Instruct and train electrician helpers and “spot-check” work completed or in progress as requested.
• Resetting boilers, chillers and other HVAC equipment as needed.
• Responding to HVAC water leaks
• Responding to plumbing leaks
• Responding to lockouts
• Contribute to improvement of the Preventive Maintenance Program.
• Assist in assuring that the scope of electrical work becomes progressively more proactive as opposed to reactive.
• Perform preventive maintenance and other job-related duties as requested.
• Process & complete all job-related documentation in a timely manner on a daily basis.
• Work with computer/tablet devices to interact with daily work orders.
• Estimate repair jobs and recommend needs.
• Interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints.
• Support outside contractors during times of renovation or construction of new facilities.
• Observe closely and adhere to all safety rules and regulations as directed.
• Participate in safety-related training and exercises as directed.
• Prepare the work site by setting up necessary equipment and protecting area from damage that might otherwise result from work activities.
• Leave the work site clean and orderly upon task completion. Ensure that all tools and equipment are clean and in safe working order and all materials are secured.
• Participate in on-call rotation as scheduled and work overtime as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 1-3 years of full-time verifiable direct work experience in the electrical trade (may include some schooling in the trade)
• Considerable knowledge of electrical principles & techniques
• Must be able to work off of a vertical lift
• High degree of independent judgment
• Must be physically capable of performing all duties
• Ability to read & interpret blueprints & specifications
• Must participate in on-call rotation
• This employee will be a regular driver as defined in the UAH Vehicle Safety Management Program, which includes, but is not limited to, possessing a valid driver’s license and maintaining an acceptable MVR in the judgment of the University’s insurance company.

Desired Qualifications:

• Graduate of trade or vocational school is preferred
• State and local electrical licensee is desired

$43,258 - $64,195
