Purpose of the Position:

The Network Engineer II is a technical specialist who receives mentoring and direction from the Lead Network Engineer, but also mentors junior level engineers. The Network Engineer II is responsible for supporting the development of reliable, efficient, and
consistent operations of UAH’s core VoIP service as well as its wired and wireless network
infrastructure. The Network Engineer II utilizes basic experience grounded in
industry-standard IT concepts and principles to participate in technical efforts to maintain, repair, secure, adapt, configure, augment, and improve OIT's VoIP solution as well as its wired and wireless infrastructure.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Support the development and maintenance of network configuration standards to reduce overhead and improve reliability, including core VoIP systems.
• Develop, evaluate, critique, and validate plans for changes and improvements to UAH’s wired and wireless network infrastructure as well as core VoIP systems.
• Validation of specifications and pricing for new capital equipment purchases, assisting in the procurement process when necessary.
• Install and/or configure network equipment in accordance with configuration standards and project/operational requirements.
• Install, configure, and/or repurpose new and existing equipment in accordance with configuration standards and project/operational requirements.
• Support maintenance and improvement of routine network monitoring to ensure that responsible parties receive timely, accurate notification of system and application issues.
• Provide tier 2 break-fix support for OIT and distributed IT constituencies.
• Repair and recover from hardware and/or software failures while coordinating and communicating with OIT management and affected stakeholders.
• Use established change management processes, requiring operational procedures to be performed with minimal customer impact.
• Ensure that UAH network infrastructure is configured and maintained according to the university’s established information security policies and ensure proper stewardship of sensitive and confidential data.
• Remain abreast of industry trends to research and recommend innovative, effective, and, where possible, automated approaches for network administration tasks.
• Address ongoing challenges by proposing comprehensive solutions that leverage existing resources and improve economies of scale.
• Manage relationships and interfaces with other functions within OIT, such as the teams responsible for desktop support, systems, and telecommunications.
• Coordinate day-to-day efforts related to routine operations on UAH’s wired and wireless network infrastructure, including campus VoIP operations.
• Serve as team coordinator of special projects
• Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in MIS, CS, CPE, or a related field -or- 5 additional years experience
• 5 years experience as a network administrator, ideally in a multi-platform academic
environment (10 years if no degree)
• 3 years of experience administering Cisco network devices
• 3 years of experience administering Juniper network devices
• 3 years of experience managing a routed data infrastructure
• 3 years of experience managing a switched network infrastructure
• 3 years of experience managing a wireless network infrastructure
• 3 years of experience managing a Voice over IP solution
• At least 5 years experience in relevant positions (10 years if no degree)

Desired Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in MIS, CS, CPE, or a related field
• CCNA or CCNP certifications, or the ability to obtain them
• Ability to read, write and speak to communicate with employees, customers, suppliers,
in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straightforward, and
professional manner.
• Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to present technical ideas and concepts clearly and concisely.
• Capacity to conduct research into issues and products as required.
• Self-starter with good time management skills.
• Desire and aptitude to learn information technology functions and processes.
• Ability to operate effectively in a fast-changing environment that demands flexibility and
quick, self-directed learning.

Published Salary (if available):

$65,000 - $75,000
